Cormorant was built in 1911 by Luke Bros to a design by A R Luke. She has been owned by Steve Meakin, our very own General Manager, for nearly 10 years. Steve has sailed her across the North sea visiting French and Belgium ports as well as the east coast and Solent areas of the UK.
Cormorant visited The Royal Southern Yacht Club, which used to be the location of Lukes yard, to attend the Hamble Classics Regatta which Ratsey and Lapthorn were also delighted to sponsor. It was a great home coming especially as she manage to win her class.
Cormorant is still very much sailed as she would have been in the early 1900s. No engine and with the only slightly modern addition this year of two small chromed winches to help with her large jibs when sailing singlehanded.
The black and white photos below were taken in the 1940’s with a family enjoying a holiday on Cormorant. These days Steve does a small amount of cruising as well as racing a number of classic regattas in the Solent.
Cormorant is obviously blessed with a vast number of Ratsey and Lapthorn sails. Her gaff yawl rig allows any number of sail configurations and Steve is always looking for ways to gain that little bit extra for her racing programme.
