The Ratsey Way

Ratsey and Lapthorn is synonymous with Classic Sailing. Our unparalleled relationship with Classic boats over the years has resulted in a shared philosophy with many traditional boat owners. Using the finest materials and adhering to a set of established Classic design principals is what we refer to as the “Ratsey Way”.

Whether it’s the threading and binding a rope’s “rat tail” or the leatherwork around corners, many elements make up the “Ratsey Way”. The most discerning owners of the most elegant boats know that the leather finishing work we specialise in you expect on a Classic sail. For a truly authentic look these are essential.

Using the finest north European cow-hide, our chosen tanneries use the best natural dyes and preservatives to create a leather product that can bind round a sail’s corner and protects a sail from the sheets and rigging and similarly protects the decking of a boat as a sail are set aloft.

We periodically run courses in Sailmaking so do call to get booked on one. We can discuss all elements that could enhance your boat’s sails and can instruct you in all elements to do with the “Ratsey Way”.
