CRAFTED BY SAILMAKERS
Ratsey and Lapthorn bags are not manufactured, they are crafted. This is an often-used word but at Ratsey this is what we have been doing for 230 years.
Ratsey have been making bags in Cowes on the Isle of Wight since the 1800’s. Originally they were made from left over sail canvas and designed to carry coal and ice to yachts before the invention of heating or refrigeration. The bags were inherently extremely strong, a trait that continues to this day with the use of sail makers threads and fabrics.
We appreciate that this determination to make a bag that will last a lifetime means our products are can cost more than other mass produced brands. But we firmly believe in the old adage that you get what you pay for, and this is more relevant than ever with the impact disposable fashion is having on the Earth’s resources. The single most sustainable action we can take is to consume less – buy once, buy well.
